Requirement
The requirement was to design an IOS App (linked to smart bins) to track residential waste management within a property management platform. The application needed to record the proportion of organic, recyclable, and non-recyclable waste, and incentivize the reduction of non-recyclable waste.
Challenges
In a context without recycling regulations, waste separation and collection are subject to people’s willingness. Therefore, the main challenge was to incentivize non-participants, due to a lack of interest, time, or incentives, to join the initiative, take ownership of it, and ultimately spread it.
Design Process
The product team gathered quantitative and qualitative data, which, through story mapping and brainstorming sessions, allowed us to define a UX strategy based on three levels of incentives that were addressed with basic principles of behavioral psychology, gamification, and user-centered design: Individual incentives, social incentives, and physical incentives. Each level of the dynamic was supported by an engagement strategy through reminder alerts, gamification, social features, progress tracking, and rewards, among others.
In collaboration with the fantastic product team, we worked in an Agile environment, where I worked until the assembly of a Figma prototype that was tested, yielding important feedback that was reflected in the final product, which broadly included:
Intuitive interface: Designed to be easy and accessible for all users
Personalization: Allowing users to set personalized goals and receive tailored recommendations
Visual information: Using graphs and visualizations for clear progress tracking
Gamification: Users could compete in rankings and earn economic benefits such as gift vouchers
Community and collaboration: Encouraging collaboration among neighbors, fostering a sense of community
